Electrifying, Groove-fuelled, Contemporary Jazz from London, UK
Just in case you’re wondering it’s pronounced “twelve twenty-four”. The name 1224 Project was born on a trip to New Orleans a year after Hurricane Katrina tore the city apart. On the door of a house (number 1224) in the southern French Quarter, we spotted “Happy Jazz”. It seemed to sum up something about the spirit of this remarkable city in the aftermath of such a disaster. The front door can be seen on our photos page.
David Bouet and Dylan Kay have been playing together since they met in 1995. A standards gig at a tiny pub in Buckingham brought them together with Leslee Booth in 1999. They have played together in various projects over the years, forming 1224 Project in 2008 as a vehicle for our original compositions.
We keep an open mind about style, our music falling somewhere amongst the categories of jazz, rock, fusion and funk. Our concern is with melody, interesting harmony and rhythmic interest. Many of the tunes come from a desire to write music that challenges and inspires us as musicians (and hopefully our audience!)
Educated at Berklee College of Music, the Guitar Institute and Oxford University, guitarist Dylan Kay has studied with some of the world's finest jazz educators, including Mick Goodrick, Hal Crook, David Tronzo, Tim Miller and Richie Hart. He has performed extensively in Boston, USA and throughout the UK, leading his own contemporary jazz bands and performing with others, including working as musical director for US jazz singer Ellen O'Brien. Dylan also teaches guitar at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London.
David Bouet started his career touring and recording with bands including Paris based funk band Zoopsie. Moving from Paris to London in the mid-90s he went on to study with master teacher Bob Armstrong for 6 years and started establishing himself as a versatile drummer.
He has performed extensively across the UK and Europe with bands including LaVida Santana and The Soul Immigrants as well as numerous jazz outfits and also runs classes and workshops from his recording studio in the East End of London.
Leslee Booth studied at GIT in Los Angeles in 1981, and went on to tour and record with Gloria Gaynor, Billy Eckstine and Freda Payne. He is now a busy freelance bass player on the London circuit - he currently plays with Helen McDonald's London Bridge Ensemble, classical guitarist and composer John Zarridan, Branco Stoysin and the Vladimir Miller Quartet.
